GERMANTOWN, Md. (WUSA 9) — The reigning Maryland state football champs are going into the upcoming season with a modest mindset.
Northwest coach Mike Neubeiser said the team takes it one day at a time.
“We don’t talk about the state championship,” Neubeiser said. “The kids are focused on getting better everyday.”
Prior to starting practices this week, Neubeiser said the Jaguars have been conditioning three days a week.
He also said the team has been playing seven on seven with other teams since the spring. Out of these games, Neubeiser said the team has gone 30-0.
“We are preparing the way we do every season,” he said.
Neubeiser said he looks to quarterback Mark Pierce, running back EJ Lee and linebacker Brendan Thompson for the team’s leadership this season. He said these players help pick up the younger players.
“They let them know what they’re doing wrong,” Neubeiser said. “They are like our coaches on the field.”
Northwest’s first game is against Magruder at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 5.
