Cupcakes are a delicacy on some nonconference football schedules, but not at Reynolds.
The Rockets (0-1) and new starting quarterback Tevin Stafford (238 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions) embarked on their season against a state-ranked 4-A team last Friday.
And this week’s task will be no less daunting.
Shelby won last year’s NCHSAA 2-A championship and is ranked No. 1 in that state classification in this week’s NCPreps.com polls.
Golden Lions senior R.J. George passed for 3,243 yards as a junior and is the South Mountain Conference preseason player of the year. Garrion Addison (114 tackles, 28 for a loss in 2013) is a former all-state selection.
Reynolds was the first of four opponents to beat Shelby in 2013, a wild 49-42 affair in Cleveland County where the teams combined for 91 points.
The Rockets and former quarterback Levi Ledford drove 98 yards on their final possession. Ledford’s replacement, Stafford, started to gain traction as last week’s 43-35 loss to West Forsyth wore on, aided the hands of C.J. Allen (10 receptions for 103 yards and one touchdowns) and the rushing of A.J. Logan (68 yards, two touchdowns).
Former All-MAC linebacker Jared Green made a team-high 10 tackles last Friday, followed by Andreas Hill, Dylan McClure and Devanie Cunningham with eight apiece.
