Short week?

No problem.

Oakland defeated Memphis White Station 35-14 Friday night at Ray Hughes Stadium five days after suffering a loss to district rival Blackman.

“The loss to Blackman brought us down,” Oakland senior Josh Cunningham said. “We were 0-1 and everybody was doubting us. This brings us back up.”

Cunningham rushed 19 times for 164 yards and scored three touchdowns. His final TD — a 41-yard scamper through the Spartan defense with 2:59 left — capped the game’s scoring. Oakland (1-1) then recovered the ensuing kickoff and ran out the clock.

Despite the lopsided score, Oakland’s offensive play was inconsistent. The Patriots finished with 268 total yards, including 181 on the ground.

“We had some silly penalties, got the ball across the 30 some and didn’t convert a couple of times,” Oakland coach Thomas McDaniel said. “It was pretty sloppy tonight. I was a little disappointed in our execution. The effort was great. Attitude was great. We’ve got to get better at the fundamental things.”

Oakland quarterbacks Christian Haffner and Cody Miller combined to complete 6 of 15 passes for 87 yards — a far cry from Haffner’s performance Sunday when he threw for 195 yards on Blackman.

White Station (0-1) took a 7-0 lead on the first play of the game when quarterback Burk Williams rolled to his left and threw a dart to Dillon Mitchell on the sideline, who sprinted past an over-pursing defense for a 77-yard touchdown in the game’s first 20 seconds. However, Oakland’s stingy defense slowed the Spartans down from there. White Station finished with just 211 total yards, including 60 rushing yards on 33 carries.

Williams was 11-of-20 passing for 151 yards.

“With the exception of the very first play, I thought our ones on defense played outstanding,” McDaniel said. “They scored on that first play, and that was just terrible. But other than that, our ones played exceptional on defense.”

Cunningham’s 2-yard touchdown run tied the score with 5:51 left in the first quarter. The score was helped by a roughing the punter penalty that kept Oakland’s drive alive. Tennessee commitment Kyle Oliver also had a 42-yard catch and run. Oliver finished with two catches for 44 yards. He had another long run called back due to a penalty.

Oakland defensive back George Gbesee scooped a fumble and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown 16 seconds later to make it 14-7. Senior Tyler Black scored on a 5-yard run to end the first half to make it 21-7. Cunningham made it 28-7 with an 8-yard score with 1:47 left in the third quarter. Kjay Johnson’s 1-yard TD run trimmed it to 28-14 with 6:43 left. White Station recovered the onside kick, but then turned it over on downs.

“Our focus this week (on defense) was to just fly to the ball,” Oakland defensive tackle Ty Nix said. “We wanted to fly around to the ball with relentless effort.”
