Ohio State forward Chelsea Mitchell expected to miss this season

Ohio State freshman forward Chelsea Mitchell, a former 2014 Princeton High School graduate, is expected to miss this upcoming women’s basketball season after suffering a torn ACL in practice last week, Ohio State announced Friday.

Mitchell will have surgery on Tuesday.

“This is certainly an unfortunate injury for Chelsea and for our team,” Ohio State coach Kevin McGuff said in a statement. “She had done a great job since she got here to put herself in a position to help us this year. We look forward to supporting her now and after her surgery so that she can make a full recovery.”

Mitchell, an Enquirer Division I all-area selection last season for the Vikings, played a key role in helping Princeton win the Division I state title.

Mitchell’s sister, Kelsey Mitchell, is a freshman guard for Ohio State. Their father, Mark Mitchell, is an assistant coach.

The Buckeyes open the season Nov. 9 against Eckerd College at 1 p.m. in Columbus.
