Okemos continued its dominance of the CAAC in lacrosse.
Led by a trio of seniors, the Chiefs won their eighth consecutive CAAC tournament title with an 18-5 win over Williamston/Haslett in Monday’s championship game.
Seniors Bailey Ellsworth, Olivia Sherman and Alex King each had four goals for Okemos, which also went undefeated in the league this season.
“I thought we played well,” Okemos coach Donny Luberto said. “We limited turnovers, played tough defense and passed well.
“… Winning the CAAC was one of the team’s goals, so it’s a good thing.”
King and Andrea Palmer each scored early for Okemos, but Williamston/Haslett evened the scored with goals from Lauren Cottrell and Bridget Farhat. The Chiefs scored nine unanswered goals over the next eight minutes to push their lead to 11-2 at halftime.
“They were the much better team tonight,” Williamston/Haslett coach Tuan Le said. “We played in transition well and tried to push our defense, but they really came out firing.”
Seven players scored for the Chiefs in the first half, including Ellsworth, Sherman, King, Palmer, Kendall Luberto, Amanda Davio and Catherine Crites.
Kenzie O’Brien scored two goals for Williamston/Haslett early in the second half. The Chiefs added two goals each from Sherman and King, and one from Ellsworth, Luberto and Palmer.
Okemos totaled 33 shots on goal to just 15 for Williamston/Haslett. Chiefs’ goalkeeper Katie Johnson finished with nine saves.
