THE WINNER: Baylor Reese
THE BASICS
School: Fairview (Okla.)
Grade: Junior
Event: Throws
Height: 5-foot-9
Athletic achievement: She hurled the discus a meet-record 140 feet, 7 inches to win her third consecutive Class 2A state championship this spring. Reese also won the discus at the state’s Meet of Champions with a throw of 132-10, and her season-best effort of 149-5 ranked as the nation’s No. 34 performance among prep competitors in 2014 at the time of her selection.
Academic excellence: Reese has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Exemplary character: A devoted parishioner in her church community and a member of her school’s student council, she has volunteered locally on behalf of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, food-donation drives and a community recycling program.
THE PRAISE
“Baylor Reese is the hardest worker I’ve ever had in 15 years of coaching track,” said Fairview coach Brock Robison. “She’s positive and upbeat, just a tremendous leader and role model for younger athletes.”
THE FUTURE: Reese will be a senior this fall.
