THE WINNER: Matthew Maton

THE BASICS

School: Summit (Bend, Ore.)
Grade: Junior
Position: Distance runner
Height: 6-foot

Athletic achievement: He raced to the Class 5A individual state championship this past season with a time of 14:59, leading the Storm to the state title as a team. Maton also won the Foot Locker West Regional championships in 15:38.9 and was third at the national Foot Locker Cross Country Championships with a time of 15:19. He added victories at the Nike BorderClash, the George Fox Classic and the Nike Pre-Nationals.

Academic excellence: Maton has maintained a B average.

Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally on behalf of youth track clinics and an animal shelter.

THE PRAISE

“Matthew has a great deal of intestinal fortitude,” said Dave Turnbull, track and field head coach at Summit. “He’s very tough, and a fierce competitor. He has the ability to reach down and find more strength when he needs it.”

THE FUTURE: Maton will be a senior this fall.
