A pair of second-team selections head Section 4 representation on all-state basketball teams as chosen by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports.
Rachel Merrill of Owego and fellow senior Julie Yacovoni of Maine-Endwell — each three-time Elite 10 selections by the Press & Sun-Bulletin, Ithaca Journal and Elmira Star-Gazette — received top recognition among Southern Tier girls. Next-highest was senior Jen Shelp of Vestal, a fifth-teamer.
Merrill averaged 12.5 points and 10.2 rebounds for an Owego squad that was runner-up to Horseheads in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference. A third-team selection last year, she set program records for blocked shots and field goal percentage.
Yacovoni, a fourth-team pick as a junior, averaged 11.5 points and 5.4 rebounds to help the Spartans to a second consecutive appearance in the final four of Class A state playoffs.
Shelp (12.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.5 steals) moves up from last year’s ninth team, and named to the sixth team was sophomore Daniella Dean of Maine-Endwell.
Liz Greendyke and Santita Ebangwese of Pittsford Sutherland, the suburban Rochester team that dealt M-E a four-point state semifinal loss, shared space on the first team.
Tops among Class AA picks from Section 4 was Horseheads junior Amanda Schiefen, a seventh-team pick.
