Scout.com’s preseason ranking of the top 50 high school football teams nationally includes three Tennessee teams – two from the Midstate.
Four-time defending Division II-AA champion Ensworth is at No. 26. According to the website, Friday’s season opener against Louisville Trinity represents “a significant step up in competition” for the Tigers, who “are a mainstay in the Top 50, even if they’re not accustomed to playing a tough schedule”.
Ensworth defeated Trinity 27-26 last August in Louisville.
Oakland is ranked 32nd by Scout.com, coming off a 12-1 season and a Class 6A quarterfinal loss to District 7-AAA rival Blackman. Eight returning defensive starters – including linebacker Josh Smith, a Vanderbilt commitment – key the Patriots’ position in the website’s list.
Defending 6A titlist Maryville is 42nd.
