It was the 1-2 connection all night long in Palm Springs as the Indians rode three touchdown passes from quarterback William Olvera to wideout Tayler Hawkins to a 42-7 victory over Xavier Prep on Friday.
No. 1, Olvera threw four touchdowns on the night, but three of them were to No. 2, Hawkins, who was clearly his chosen target.
“Today, he was my favorite target. He was getting open. But you’ve got to spread the ball around a little bit more because we have a lot of athletes,” said Olvera, who was surprisingly critical of his game following the lopsided victory. “So, he was my favorite target today for sure.”
Hawkins had five receptions for 55 yards, with touchdown catches of 11, 6 and 20 yards.
“He’s fast, mainly he’s fast,” Olvera said of his fellow junior. “He runs away from defenders and he gets open quickly and I can give him the ball right now and he just does the rest.”
Olvera was 21 of 26 for 171 yards, including one more touchdown toss to Franklin Miller from five yards out. But it was Hawkins who grabbed the spotlight, with his three touchdown receptions a personal best.
“My coach just told me I was going to have a big game — homecoming game — and he gave me the ball and I made it happen,” Hawkins said. “(Olvera and I) have a great relationship; we’ve grown up since I started playing, so that’s (always) been my quarterback.”
Palm Springs also racked up two rushing touchdowns: A four-yard jaunt from Israel Gumero, and a 61-yard sprint from Joshua Barlow, who broke through the Saints’ line late in the game.
Stephany Aguilar is named Homecoming Queen during the prep football game between Xavier Prep and Palm Springs at Palm Springs Friday , October 10 2014.
Tough to win like that
Xavier Prep had a rough statistical game, with quarterback Sava Voyne passing for just 62 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception. It was even worse for the Saints on the ground where they totaled zero yards, although they did get their only score on a 2-yard quarterback keeper by Voyne.
Still looking for No. 2
After winning their first Desert Valley League game of the season against Indio two weeks ago, Xavier Prep has dropped two in a row to Cathedral City and now Palm Springs.
Xavier Prep (3-4, 1-2 DVL) heads to Coachella Valley on Friday. Palm Springs (5-1, 2-0) plays at La Quinta in a matchup of the top two teams in the DVL.
