The Parkway High School New Year’s Tournament, sponsored by Bossier Federal Credit Union, will tip off today with three games at the Parkway gym.
The event will tip off with Bossier playing Captain Shreve at 2 p.m., followed by BTW against Green Oaks at 4 p.m. Parkway will play El Dorado (Ark.), which recently won the Minden Holiday Tournament, at 6 p.m. in the first day finale.
“This is the first time for us to hold this tournament, but we wanted to play in one at New Year’s,” Parkway coach Aaron Megee said. “We had three teams that dropped out at the start of the year (Fair Park, Mansfield and Many), but we still put together a good field.”
On Friday, Plain Dealing has its opener against the BTW-Green Oaks winner, while the winners from the Bossier-Shreve and Parkway-El Dorado contests will play at 6 p.m.
The consolation finals are at 2 p.m. Saturday, followed by the third place game at 4 p.m. The championship is slated for 6 p.m.
El Dorado is considered the favorite going into the event after the Lady Wildcats waltzed through Neville, Woodlawn, Southwood and Minden on their way to the Minden tournament title.
“Green Oaks has really been playing well and I’ve heard that El Dorado is very, very good,” Megee said. “Things worked out where we put them against ourselves. We are very young, so I figure it’s seeded about where it should be.”
El Dorado is built around 6-foot-3 center Taylor McCool, who scored 23 points in the championship contest, while earning Most Valuable Player honors. The Lady Wildcats won that game 59-50.
Green Oaks (11-4) could also make a run, after already logging wins over Southwood, Bossier and Huntington this winter. Tickets are $5 for everyone.
