THE WINNER: Maggie Balint
School: Avon Grove (West Grove, Pa.)
Athletic achievement: She led the Red Devils to a 20-4 record and a berth in the Class AAAA state quarterfinals, scheduled for June 5. Through 24 games, Balint owned a 20-3 record in the circle with a 0.46 ERA and 350 strikeouts in 165.2 innings pitched. She also posted a .405 batting average. A Second Team All-State selection as a freshman, she is a two-time All-Chesmont League honoree.
Academic excellence: Balint has maintained a B average while taking classes at Delaware Valley Friends School.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally assisting the elderly and coaching youth softball players.
“She doesn’t walk people, she hits her spots, she’s got all the pitches, and they’re all fast,” said Brian Stackhouse, head coach at Downington East. “She’s the most dominant player I’ve seen.”
THE FUTURE: Balint will be a junior this fall.
