Poljan's 38 lifts Cougars by Hornets

By

Sophomore Tony Poljan scored 38 points to lead Lansing Catholic to a 56-50 home CAAC White victory over Williamston on Friday night.

“Offensively, we wanted to go to our strength, which is Tony Poljan inside,” Lansing Catholic coach Darren Zwick said. “He had a phenomenal game tonight.”

It was the first conference loss of the season for the Hornets (11-6, 9-1), who clinched the White title a week ago with a win over second-place Portland. Williamston defeated the third-place Cougars in their first meeting on Jan. 24, and Lansing Catholic (11-6, 7-3) wanted to exact revenge.

“We wanted to force Williamston to play a half-court game. Last time, they were able to get out and run on us, and I thought that was the difference,” Zwick said. “By and large, I think we did a pretty good job of containing them.”

The two teams could possibly meet again in a Class B district final.

“But we both also know that you have the play the game in front of you before you look to the next one,” Zwick said. “There is that possibility, though, and I think both schools would look forward to that matchup again.”

The Hornets trailed the Cougars by 38-35 early in the fourth quarter when 6-foot-8 Williamston forward Tom Cotter got called for his fourth foul with 7:15 to play and was forced to the bench. Without his height, the Hornets struggled to defend Lansing Catholic’s inside game, and the Cougars were able to add to their lead.

“(Cotter’s foul) changed everything,” Williamston coach Jason Bauer said. “I had to go to my bench. And while I have a lot of confidence in my bench, bringing the starter out changes the whole game plan of where and who you’re attacking.”

A 3-pointer by Williamston’s Riley Lewis with 1:51 left narrowed the Cougars’ lead to 49-47. On the next play, Lansing Catholic’s Matthew Fata drove to the basket for an easy layup and stretched the lead back to four points.

Lansing Catholic ultimately sealed the win in the final minute at the free-throw line, as Fata made 3 of 4 and Poljan hit 4 of 6. Poljan 9 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter.

“I just kept on scoring when my team needed me, and I was open so I took the shots,” Poljan said. “This was a really good team win. We’re looking to play well and hopefully make a run now.”

Fata finished with 14 points for the Cougars and combined with Poljan for 52 of the Cougars’ 56 points. Senior David Poljan scored the remaining four points.

“I didn’t realize how good (Poljan’s) game was until I saw the box score and it said 38,” Bauer said. “I figured he had 20 points or something like that. But they only had three guys that scored, and that could be a good thing or a bad thing. We know what we need to focus on, obviously.”
