KUSA — Game of the Week, Pomona and Columbine start the second round of the 5A state football playoffs at Jeffco Stadium for an early 4pm game. Going into the game, the #1 ranked Pomona Panthers were 8-2 coming off a big win against #8 Arapahoe High School. The #5 Columbine Rebels were 5-5 overall, earning a huge win against #4 Rangeview last week 48-7.
The first score of the game came from Pomona’s Isaac Marquez pulling in a pass from Justin Roberts for a 7-O lead. However, the lead didn’t last very long as the Rebels’ Austin Norton turns in a 30 yard run for a touchdown to tie the game before the end of the first quarter.
The game remained 7-7 at the end of the first half.
In the second half, Isaac Marquez runs in his second touchdown from the 1-yard line on 4th down nearing the end of the third quarter. The Panthers miss the PAT to make the score 13-7 to end the 3rd quarter. Late in the 4th quarter, Isaac Marquez strikes again and gets his 3rd touchdown of the night and runs in a 2-point conversion to put Pomona up 21-7.
However, Columbine’s Mikey Griebel runs 73-yards for a touchdown to shorten Pomona’s lead 21-14.The late touchdown was not enough to force the Panthers into overtime and Pomona wins 21-14 over the Columbine Rebels.
