The Port Huron High School hockey team knows Warren Mott all too well.
Last season, Mott defeated Port Huron twice and left a bitter taste of defeat.
But with a new season underway Port Huron is aiming higher. On Thursday the Big Reds opened their Macomb Area Conference Blue Division season with a 8-2 victory over their rivals at McMorran Pavilion.
Port Huron dominated the game from start to finish and out-shot Mott 54-17.
“You don’t want to battle in your end the whole time,” Port Huron forward Brendan Conard said after scoring two goals. “This gives us a lot of confidence honestly. Last year we got beat by these guys twice. Tonight was a good showing of what we can do in this division.”
Port Huron led 3-0 after the first period and 6-1 after two periods, before coasting to the victory.
Andrew Morris had two goals for Port Huron. Will Kriewall added a goal and three assists and Pat O’Brien, Carter Smith and Bruce Hudson also scored.
Dayne Davis had three assists for the Big Reds and Ally Fettery had 15 saves for Port Huron.
“We kept up the tempo, kept pressure on the puck and played our position,” O’Brien said. “This should give us a good boost of confidence. We played well tonight.”
Port Huron (1-0, 3-4) will return Saturday against L’Anse Creuse North.
“We took a week off and practiced all week,” coach Ben Pionk said. “The concern is that we would be sluggish. We knew we had to get a jump on them and apply pressure. Our goal was to put pressure on them and to play in their end.
“It was a team effort. Everyone helped out and it really helped.”
