After 45 years, 11 state championships and a national record for prep baseball coaching wins, Gene Schultz retired from Kee High School of Lansing on Monday night.

Schultz owns the Iowa record with 1,754 career victories, which includes summer, spring and fall seasons during his time coaching the Hawks. The National Federation of State High School Associations recognizes his record with 1,578 wins in summer baseball.

Kee won nine summer state titles under Schultz and won a state-best 32 state tournament games. He also won 398 games as Kee’s boys’ basketball coach.

“(Schultz) arrived at Kee High School in the fall of 1969 and almost immediately his teams stamped themselves as a perennial power,” Iowa High School Athletic Association information director Bud Legg said in a release on Tuesday.

Kee’s last Class 1-A state championship came in 2005.
