Prep basketball Formidable Four: Area teams contending for conference titles

By

With the calendar creeping ever closer to March, several prep basketball conference title races are heating up.

The Roncalli boys basketball team is in contention for the Olympian Conference championship while Reedsville and Manitowoc Lutheran remain in the hunt for the OC girls title. Also for the girls, Two Rivers and Kiel are part of a packed field in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference.

Of all the area teams with visions of a conference championship, the Jets (18-1, 15-0 OC) look to be the most secure with three games remaining in the regular season.

Roncalli holds a three-game lead on both Valders (16-3, 12-3) and Brillion (14-5, 12-3) but swept the Vikings this season to own the tiebreaker and already owns a win over the Lions. A win tonight against host Hilbert (2-17, 1-14) would clinch the OC for the Jets.

Things are much more uncertain for the Olympian on the girls side where the Panthers (16-2, 12-2 OC) lead the pack but have three teams within two and a half games of first. One of those teams, the Lancers (11-6, 10-4), have four games left in the conference but only one, a meeting Friday with host and fellow contender Brillion (14-3, 11-3), against a team above .500.

Reedsville has a similarly favorable schedule, with just a matchup at St. Mary Central (9-9, 8-6) on Feb. 20 remaining against a team above .500 in OC play. The biggest threat against a back-to-back Olympian crown for the Panthers could be Hilbert (11-5, 9-4), which has handed Reedsville both of their only losses this season including a 42-35 defeat on Tuesday.

The Panthers swept both Lutheran and Brillion this season in their four combined matchups.

Finally in the EWC, Two Rivers (14-3, 9-2 EWC) and Kiel (8-8, 6-4) are, like the OC, part of a group of four teams with two and a half games of the top.

Two Rivers is currently tied with Plymouth (11-7, 9-2) for first in the conference while Waupun (12-7, 8-3) and Kiel are right behind. The scenario is set up for the team from the Cool City to be able to control their own destiny with road games against both the Panthers (Feb. 21) and Warriors (Feb. 27) in the final two games of the season.

While Kiel is on the outside looking up at the moment, the Raiders could jump back into the race with a meeting with Kewaskum (2-15, 0-10) and a pair of matchups against Campbellsport (6-8, 4-6) before a season-ending meeting with Plymouth at home.

No matter how the races shake out in the end, plenty of area squads will be getting an early glimpse of playoff-like action before the WIAA tournaments even begin.
