Stevens Point Area Senior High received a No. 2 seed for its highly-competitive Division 1 sectional as the WIAA boys basketball postseason brackets were released Sunday.
The Panthers — the Wisconsin Valley Conference champions — are one of three teams ranked in the Associated Press state poll.
Neenah (No. 3) earned the top seed, and beat No. 5 SPASH earlier this season. Oshkosh North (No. 6) is seeded third.
Overall five area teams earned No. 1 seeds, including Marshfield in Division 1. The Tigers are second in the WVC.
The boys playoffs begin Feb. 25 with the the state tournament set for March 13-15 at the Kohl Center.
Auburndale and Abbotsford, the leaders of the Marawood Conference South and North Divisions, respectively, both earned top seeds in Division 4.
Auburndale, which reached the state championship game last year, could face a pair of two seeds — Pacelli and Iola-Scandinavia in the sectional semifinal and title games, respectively.
Auburndale and Abbotsford are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, in the state poll while Pacelli was tied with Blair-Taylor for eighth.
The winner of the sectional faces a potential state semifinal matchup with Dominican — the defending state champions.
Newman Catholic, Owen-Withee and Port Edwards all earned top seeds in Division 5. Owen-Withee was 10th in the latest state poll, while Port Edwards received votes.
Merrill earned a No. 2 seed in Division 2 as did Columbus Catholic, which beat Owen-Withee this past week, in Division 5.
