Prep gymnastics: Lincoln edges out Valders/Roncalli in tight contest

In a meeting of the area’s two prep gymnastics teams Monday night, Manitowoc Lincoln narrowly edged out host Valders/Roncalli 112.45-110.175.

The co-op squad was led by Hailey Szalewski, who finished first in the all-around with a score of 30.55, but Lincoln’s duo of Danielle Carle (30.45) and Cassidy Mrotek (30.275) took second and third, respectively, to propel the Ships to victory.

Lincoln, which lost standout gymnast and reigning HTR All-Area Gymnast of the Year Alyssa DeZeeuw for the season with a fractured ankle earlier this winter, earned its highest score of the season.

“I think some of the girls didn’t want the spotlight on themselves,” said Lincoln coach Jacque Bartow. “With Alyssa out though, they’re going to have to become accustomed to the spotlight.”

In addition to taking first in the all-around, Szalewski was also first on the uneven bars (7.6), floor (8.25) and second on vault (8.2) behind Lincoln’s Sloan Tackett (8.3). Tackett also was third on uneven bars (7.2).

Carle’s highest place came on the beam, finishing first with a score of 7.725 while taking second on floor (8.0) and third on vault (7.8). Mrotek also earned a pair of second-place finishes for the Ships, on uneven bars (7.45) and beam (7.325).

Also for Valders/Roncalli, Meghan Jacoby was third on beam (7.15) while teammate Kelly Jacoby was third (7.825) in floor.

Both sides return to action on Saturday in the Antigo Invite.
