Two weeks ago, Stevens Point Area Senior High’s boys hockey team denied Wausau West the outright Wisconsin Valley Conference title with an overtime win at Marathon Park.
Today, the two teams meet again with their seasons on the line.
The two rivals are among the five area boys and girls hockey teams that are playing in sectional semifinal games.
The other matchups are Wisconsin Rapids hosting West Salem/Bangor, and the Central Wisconsin Storm hosting Point/Rapids at Greenheck Field House.
All games are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
West, the top seed in Sectional 3, is facing No. 4 SPASH in the playoffs for the second straight year. Last season, the Warriors downed SPASH 5-3 in the sectional championship game at K.B. Willett Arena to earn their fourth-straight state tournament appearance.
West rolled to a 10-0 win over Lakeland in the regional championship game, while SPASH downed D.C. Everest 5-2.
SPASH or West faces the winner of the Northland Pines-Antigo matchup on Saturday in Eagle River.
Wisconsin Rapids, the top-seeded team in Sectional 4, is vying for its second straight state appearance.
The co-WVC champions had no trouble in a 10-0 win over Black River Falls in a regional title game. Fourth-seeded West Salem advanced with a 6-0 win over Viroqua.
The winner faces either Baraboo/Portage or Onalaska at Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday.
Central Wisconsin has advanced to the girls state hockey tournament every year since 2008, and faced Point/Rapids in the sectional semifinals in 2011.
The top-seeded Storm rolled past Medford 12-0 in the regional title game, while fourth-seeded Point/Rapids downed Marshfield 3-0.
The Storm beat the Red Panthers 6-0 in late November at K.B. Willett Arena.
The winner faces either Rhinelander or Northland Pines at noon Saturday at Eagle River.
