The Division 2 second-ranked Marshall boys’ golf team ended Lakeview’s nine-year run atop the SMAC East Division on Wednesday.
The Redhawks held off the host Spartans by two strokes during the final SMAC East Jamboree of the season at Cedar Creek Golf Club, giving Marshall the outright division title. The contest was also the final SMAC East Jamboree with the current makeup of schools, as Harper Creek, Coldwater and Marshall are leaving to help form the Interstate Eight Conference.
“We’ve been very fortunate in golf. The coaches and kids are all really supportive of each other, the coaches get along great,” said Lakeview coach Tony Evans. “It’s kind of bittersweet because we’ll miss competing with those guys and hanging out during the season. It will be new for all of us. Those are relationships we’ve built over the years, so it’s something we’ll all have to get used to.”
