Karina Holliday scored 16 points and the Poudre High School girls basketball team shook off a low-scoring first quarter to beat Cheyenne Central 40-32 Friday, sending the Impalas to the Battle of the Rockies Tournament championship game. They’ll face a familiar opponent in tournament host, Rocky Mountain, which beat Longmont 67-57 Friday night. The two city teams play for the title 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Rocky Mountain High School. Poudre trailed Cheyenne Central (Wyo.) 10-4 after the first quarter Friday, and the teams went into halftime tied at 13. Poudre then buried Cheyenne Central in the third, outscoring the Indians 17-1.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN 67, LONGMONT 57 — Wesley Bannister and Asiah Lawson combined for 34 points, helping the Lobos advance to the championship game of their home tournament.
Bannister led the Lobos (5-2) with 19, Lawson added 15 and McKenzee Gertz chipped in 13. Rocky Mountain trailed by six after the first quarter, but outscored Longmont 37-21 in the second half.
FOSSIL RIDGE 47, ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. 25 — Sami Steffeck scored 13 to lead the SaberCats to Saturday’s Gillette Invitational championship game against No. 2 ranked Campbell County (Wyo.).
Fossil Ridge (3-1) plays the team from Gillette, Wyoming, at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The SaberCats have faced tough competition in Wyoming. On Thursday, they beat two-time North Dakota state champion, Century.
FORT COLLINS 54, GATEWAY 28 — The Lambkins bounced back from their first loss of the season, advancing to the consolation finals of the Dakota Ridge Tournament.
Fort Collins (3-1) plays Green Mountain 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Dakota Ridge High School.
WHEAT RIDGE 54, LIBERTY COMMON 45 — Halley Miklos had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, but Liberty Common fell just short of beating Class 4A Wheat Ridge.
Kayla Rhoads added 12 points for the Eagles (2-2).
CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN 66, POUDRE 63 — Val Salumu scored 36 points, hitting shots from all over the floor, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Impalas over Cheyenne Mountain on Friday at the Fort Collins-Poudre Tipoff Classic.
After trailing the entire game, Poudre (1-4) tied the game at 63 in the final minute. Cheyenne Mountain hit 3-of-4 free throws, and Poudre’s 3-point attempt at the end of the game was off the mark. Nathan Resty led Cheyenne Mountain with 25 points.
Mitchel Yokem pitched in 14 points for the Impalas, who play Thompson Valley at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Fort Collins High School.
LIBERTY COMMON 76, WELDON VALLEY 32 — Josh VanVleet scored 17 points and Andrew Jones added 15 as Liberty Common cruised Friday night in the blowout win.
Philip Allmendinger pitched in 10 as 12 Liberty Common players found the score book to help the Eagles improve to 3-0.
RESURRECTION CHRISTIAN 87, DOLORES HUERTA PREP 32 — Tanner Ervin scored 20, Luke Fick added 18 and Koby Bishop and Michael Stevenson each scored 14 as Resurrection Christian lit up the scoreboard Friday night.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN 57, FORT COLLINS 12 — Rocky Mountain (6-1) won all but three matches in the Friday dual, a good tune-up for Saturday’s Johnstown/Roosevelt Tournament, which features teams from all over the state including Discovery Canyon and Montrose.
Rocky coach Ken Taylor praised the performance of 120-pounder Logan Murray and Joseph O’Donnell at 138.
