Prep Roundup: SMAC East goes to Spartan grapplers, again

For the fifth straight season, the Lakeview wrestling team finished on top of the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference East Division.

The Spartans captured the division title on Wednesday with a 56-18 win over visiting Battle Creek Central, giving Lakeview a 7-0 record in the league.

The win was especially sweet for Lakeview considering it was the last season of the SMAC East in the current allignment of teams, as Harper Creek, Marshall and Coldwater are leaving next season to become founding members of the Interstate Eight Conference.

“It’s nice to know that were were on top at the end of the old thing and we feel like moving into the new league it puts us into a good position of saying, ‘This is what we’re about,'” said Lakeview coach Chris Dunham. “And it’s great for it to come against a team that is going into the new league with us (in BCC). It’s just a rivalry that we’re excited will continue into the future.”
