CAMDEN – The defending Southern Central Athletic Association West Division champion St. Philip girls’ basketball team tipped off league play with a crossover contest at Camden-Frontier on Friday.
The Tigers clung to a late lead and iced the game at the free throw line against their SCAA East Division hosts, holding on for a 37-32 victory.
“We were able to get an eight-point lead at halftime; Camden fought back and it was nip and tuck from there,” said St. Philip head coach Tony Warren. “We pulled away late. Megan Gordon hit a running floater and from there we managed to hit some free throws.”
In last season’s matchup between the schools, Camden-Frontier defeated St. Philip 42-23.
“Our defense was outstanding,” Warren said. “Camden pretty much has the same team they had last year when they beat us by 19 points… We’re just going to keep plugging away. I think we’ll just keep getting better as the season goes on.”
Gordon led St. Philip (1-1) with 12 points; Kameron Haley had five points; Nina Winkler had six points, five assists and four steals; Emily Schaub had five points; Adrian Hibbard had seven points and five rebounds; and Riley Rutherford had five rebounds.
