Dan Welke scattered four hits with four strikeouts and allowed one earned run on Wednesday as the Marshall High baseball team opened its season with a 5-1, non-league victory over Jackson.
Also for the Redhawks, Alex Walton went 2-for-4 and Drew Devine had a triple and an RBI.

(At) Jackson 7, BCC 0 (Wed.): In a game played at Spring Arbor University, the Bearcats trailed only 2-0 at intermission in their season opener before giving up five second-half goals. Goalkeeper Sierra Fires made a big 38 saves for Battle Creek Central.

Hillsdale College Charger Invite (Wed.): St. Philip earned 18 medals at the 20-team event.
Getting medals on the boys’ side for the Tigers: The spring medley relay (200-200-400-800) of Tim Minier, David Downey, Kevin Greenman and Tyler Hubbard-Neil were fourth in 4:03.53; Greenman was fourth in the high jump at 5-10; Hubbard-Neil was sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:15.74; and Downey was sixth in the long jump at 19-06.25.
On the girls’ side: Ava Strenge was second in the 3,200-meter run in 12:08.45; the 1,600 relay of Megan Casterline, Riley Rutherford, Sierra Hubbard-Neil and Maria Dechant was fifth in 4:43.37; Maria Dechant was sixth in the 400 in 1:09.41; the sprint medley relay of Casterline, Rutherford, Strenge and Dechant was sixth; and Rutherford was eighth in the high jump at 4-06.
