Let’s take a quick look at what’s going on in the metro area.
EAGLES CRUISE AT PAN AM: Warren Easton (6-1, 2-0) took a 26-6 halftime lead on the strength of three scoring passes from Deshawn Capers-Smith to Tyron Johnson and a 1-yard run by Capers-Smith, then let their defense force McDonogh 35 (1-5, 0-1) into three second-half turnovers, including a fumble that Calvin Lunkins ran back for a touchdown to cap off a 47-6 win at Pan American Stadium.
Capers-Smith threw his first interception of the year, but made up for it with 246 yards and four touchdowns. The Roneagles’ lone score came when a tipped Sidney Wilson pass found its way into the hands of Omar Spears in the end zone.
OWLS STOP COUGARS: Chalmette’s Masen Mitchell carried the ball 17 times for 204 yards and four touchdowns, and the Owls (2-5, 1-1) reversed a 14-0 deficit to claim a 59-20 win over District 8-5A opponent Helen Cox (1-6, 0-2) Thursday night. Quarterback Dion Ray passed for 168 yards and three touchdowns and added 101 yards on the ground for the Cougars, but it wasn’t enough.
TITANS WIN THRILLER: Lakeshore’s visit to Riverdale was a matchup of stars shining bright. Lakeshore RB David Ducre, an LSU commit, had 25 carries for 112 yards and four touchdowns as the Titans scored 28 straight for a 42-14 lead. Then Riverdale’s Donte Jackson ripped off four straight scores to tie the game. But Lakeshore’s Ryan Miller kicked a game-winning field goal for a 45-42 win.
Jackson rushed for 59 yards and caught five passes for 118 to go with his four touchdowns, and Darius Bovie rolled up 279 total yards and two scores for the Rebels.
MUSTANGS WIN UPTOWN BATTLE: Lusher got 177 yards and a touchdown from bruising tailback Joshua Barney, but McMain quarterback Darnell Williams tossed three touchdown passes in the Mustangs’ 20-13 win at Lusher. Jamairyn Wallace caught six passes for 94 yards and two of Williams’ scoring passes. Lions quarterback Eli Poche connected with Louis Landrum III—who had four catches for 52 yards—for a touchdown.
CARDINALS SCORE ANOTHER DISTRICT WIN: Sacred Heart may have started the season 5-13, but the Cardinals are on an 8-2 run, and improved to 5-1 in district play with a 25-10, 25-6, 25-6 sweep of St. Mary’s. Ellie Silvia tallied eight kills for Sacred Heart, and Britton St. Pierre contributed 10 digs and five aces.
BULLDOGS HAND NORTHSHORE FIRST DISTRICT LOSS: Alexis Zulli led Fontainebleau (18-14, 6-3) with 14 kills in the Bulldogs’ 25-15, 16-25, 25-23, 19-25, 16-14 win over District 4-I opponent Northshore (22-9, 7-1). Emily Campbell and Tiffany Marlbrough paced the Bulldog offense and defense with 26 assists and 28 digs, respectively. Hailey Kirkpatrick led the Panthers with 17 kills and 26 digs, supported by 46 assists from Hannah Epperley.
CRESCENTS DOWN EAGLES: Cabrini (13-11, 5-0) swept Warren Easton 25-9, 25-5, 25-3 Thursday. Victoria Tanner served up 10 aces for the Crescents, who got five kills from Rakell Spencer and eight kills and four digs from Joey Alsandor.
FOUR-SET WIN FOR DOMINICAN: Chalmette’s Kaitlyn LaCour turned in an outstanding performance with 15 kills and five blocks, but Domincan (22-10, 5-2) came back from a first-set loss for a 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 win over the Owls (12-11, 3-5). Hannah McGowan notched a game-high 18 kills for Dominican, and Olivia Boudreaux and Abby Buchert added 28 assists and 22 digs, respectively. Emily Pulley dished out 13 assists for the Owls, and Kelli Gallardo scooped 40 digs.
