Prep wrestling: Locals compete in Gene Gehl Classic

Two Rivers’ Ty Pelot and Scott Skornicka along with Kiel’s Aaron Field and Matt Halverson participated in the 24th annual Gene Gehl Classic this past Tuesday at Kimberly High School.

According to organizers, the All-Star event is designed to bring some of the top talent in Northeast Wisconsin together to showcase their skills.

Both of TR’s wrestlers picked up wins.

Fresh off his third-place finish in Division 2 at 120 pounds at the WIAA Individual State Tournament, Pelot recorded a 7-1 win over Dillan Micke of Wrightstown. Micke placed fifth at 113.

Scott Skornicka, state runner-up in D2 at 195, topped Shiocton’s Dominic Gunderson 13-2. Gunderson was a forth-place finisher in D3 at the same weight.

Kiel’s Halverson, who won the Divsion 2 state title at 285 pounds, knocked off Manawa’s Casey Johnson, by decision, 8-4. Johnson placed fifth in D3 at 220.

Field, who was a state qualifier at 182 pounds this season, fell to Neenah’s Luke Nelessen 6-2.
