The Lakeview boys’ tennis team was eliminated at the MHSAA Division 2 state finals on Friday at Kalamazoo College’s Stowe Stadium.
Lakeview’s No. 3 singles player Tyler Horan, the No. 5 seed at that flight and the Spartans’ lone seeded player, made it to the quarterfinals before falling to Birmingham Seaholm (the No. 4 seed) in a third-set tiebreaker.
All of the Spartans’ other flight were eliminated earlier in the day.
Horan started with a first-round bye, then defeated Walled Lake Western 6-1, 6-0 before losing to Seaholm.
At No. 1 singles, Camaron Babas lost his first-round match to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central 6-1, 6-2; at No. 2 singles, Brij Banerji had a first-round by then lost to Forest Hills Central’s No. 4 seed 6-1, 6-0; and No. 4 singles Brett Hermsen had a first-round bye then lost to Birmingham Groves 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 1 doubles, A.J. Moore-Jacob Lamb had a first-round by and then lost to Gibralter Carlson 6-2, 6-2; No. 2 Andrew Behrndt-Brandon Corra had a first-round bye then lost 7-5, 6-4 to Gibralter Carlson; No. 3 Zane Huckaba-James George lost in the first round to Grosse Pointe North 6-4, 6-1; and No. 4 P.J. Brady-Duncan Holmes had a first-round bye and then lost to sixth-seeded Detroit Jesuit 6-1, 6-0.
In the Holly/Fenton area, results were not available for Day 1 action.
Local team Coldwater, ranked No. 6, was in the field after winning its first MHSAA regional title in 18 years.
For the Cardinals in singles, No. 1 Derek Sammons was seeded fifth entering Friday’s action, No. 2 Nathan Waterbury was seeded fifth, No. 3 Kumaran Arivoli was unseeed, and No. 4 Keagan Dwyer was seeded fifth. Sammons, Waterbury and Dwyer were scheduled to have first-round byes.
None of Coldwater’s doubles duos — No. 1 Austin Butler-Kam Miller, No. 2 Buddy Bailey-Nolan Duda, No. 3 Austin Hodson-Shane O’Grady and No. 4 Christian Pine-Nick Galliers were seeeded.
The Bailey-Duda and Hodson-O’Grady tandems were scheduled to have first-round byes.
The second and final day of the tourney is scheduled for Saturday.
