Pueblo East wins first 3A state championship

KUSA — The Pueblo East Eagles and the Rifle Bears faced off in a 3A battle at Dutch Clark Stadium in Pueblo, Saturday afternoon. The Eagles had a big upset win in the semi-finals while Rifle handled Fort Morgan with ease.

The teams started out in a defensive battle. In Pueblo East’s first drive, they had fumbled the ball three times and recovered it back all three times only to get stopped before the goal line in a turn over on downs. The Eagles fumble again on their next drive and their luck runs out, when Rifle’s #20 Ty Leyba.

The Bears marched down the field and scored on a 40-yard pass to put the them up 7-0.

The two teams relied heavily on their star players, Daniel Martin of the Eagles and Brock Clark of the Bears, on both offense and defense. The Eagles’ quarterback, Daniel Martin, had a stellar game with powerful runs, quick/accurate throws, and a great ability to run from pressure. Martin ran the ball in with 7:33 left in the 2nd quarter to tie the game 7-7.

The two end the half even 7-7. Clark lead Rifle’s defense to crucial stops on the goal line and charged the offense forward with powerful runs including a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half.

The game progressed no further after Clark’s opening touchdown. In the 4th quarter on an 80-yard run by Pueblo East’s #3 Bryson Torres started a scoring frenzy for the Eagles. Pueblo East took the game from there and never looked back. The Eagles defeated the Bears 30-14 to win the 3A state championship.
