Queen Creek dominates Poston Butte, remains unbeaten

With a chill in the air, Queen Creek gave their Division III neighbor Florence Poston Butte the cold shoulder to remain undefeated with a 36-3 drumming at Poston Butte Friday night.

The defense led the charge, nearly blanking Poston Butte (4-4), holding them to a single field goal in the first quarter.

That field goal, a 27-yarder by Kai Cambra, was set up by junior linebacker Gabe Rey, who ended Queen Creek’s drive by sacking quarterback Carson Jones and then blocking the subsequent punt to give Poston Butte the ball on Queen Creek’s 47 yard line.

Poston Butte recovered the ensuing onside kick on their 49-yard line, but Queen Creek’s defense pushed them back and did not allow them to cross midfield. Poston Butte’s offense only saw the Queen Creek side of the field three times for the game.

“We had a slow start on offense,” Queen Creek coach Joe Germaine said. “Our defense got the momentum for us with big hits and stops all night long. Made it real tough for them.”

Queen Creek’s offense managed five rushing touchdowns from four different players.

Matt Guida led the way with 165 yards rushing and two touchdowns, a 2-yard run in the first half and a 51-yard run late in the third quarter. Guida also setup Queen Creek’s first touchdown of the night, a keeper by quarterback Carson Jones, with a 56-yard run down to the Poston Butte 2.

Fullback Del Contreras added another 2-yard touchdown when Poston Butte fumbled the opening kickoff in the second half.

“I wish we wouldn’t have had some of those let downs,” Poston Butte coach Mike De La Torre said. “We had hoped for some better things in that third quarter. We wanted to do some things in that second half. Still proud of our kids to keep on fighting. They (Queen Creek) got a couple of good strong running backs back there.”

Marcus Still, who platoons with Guida in the backfield, ran in for an 11-yard touchdown to give Queen Creek (7-0) a 22-6 halftime lead.
