Queen Creek remained undefeated in its toughest test to date dropping Gilbert Campo Verde 21-3 in a Division III game in Queen Creek.
But it wasn’t easy.
Queen Creek (9-0) had to punt two times in-a-row for the first time all season before running back Matt Guida scampered 32 yards for a 7-0 lead after Miguel Ibarra’s kick with 11:13 to go in the second quarter. Guida finished the game with 24 carries and 224 yards rushing.
“We knew coming into the game that this was going to be a tough test,” Guida said. “It took us awhile to get going but we finally got into our rhythm. I just wish I had that one fumble back.”
Queen Creek had two crucial fumbles in the game, one by Guida on the Campo Verde 1-yard line.
“I just didn’t put the ball away,” Guida said. “It was stripped away. We just played too messy of a game.”
Queen Creek’s Marcus Still fumbled on the Queen Creek 20-yard line and that led to Campo Verde’s only points in the game.
A 21-yard field goal by Austin Wells with 2:47 left in the second quarter making the score 7-3.
David GenAntonio gave Queen Creek some breathing room when he scored on a 1-yard plunge for a 14-3 lead with 4:12 to go in the third quarter.
Campo Verde (6-3) had its problems, too. Quarterback Luke Pineda was picked off by Queen Creek’s Michael Graff at the line. That led to a 42-yard pass from Queen Creek quarterback Carson Jones to Kevin Paarkinson five plays later that put the game away, making the score 21-3 with 10:20 left in the game.
