Randolph boys track and field takes home Summit Relays team title

Ally Schlosser and Mackenzie Barry made an interesting pair as they ran around the track at Tatlock Sports Complex on Saturday morning.

Schlosser, a tall, auburn-haired Parsippany sophomore, was trying to keep up with Barry, a petite Mendham senior, on the final leg of the distance medley relay.

Schlosser was out of breath as Barry chatted about how she’d had a fever for most of the week and was still achy. Parsippany head coach Walter Bleuler shouted, “You’re running with the big dogs now,” making Barry laugh.

Mendham finished second, and the Red Hawks third in the DMR at the Summit Relays.

“I’m out of breath, and she’s talking to me, having a great time,” Schlosser said. “The hardest part is running my own race. If there’s someone in front of me, it pushes me. When there’s someone like Mackenzie in front of me, who’s so much faster, in my mind, I think I shouldn’t be there. But I did it anyway.”

The Randolph boys dashed away from the field with 70 points, 18 more than second-place Morris Hills. Millburn won the discus — the final girls event scored on Saturday — to take the team title by eight points.

The Rams’ girls finished with 30 points, giving Randolph the combined team title as well.

The Randolph boys won both the shuttle and intermediate hurdles, though their goal of the Morris County record remained out of reach. Seniors Collin McAlmont (57.32) and Stephen Nalbach went 1-2 in the intermediates. McAlmont, Nalbach and Dan Leanza teamed with sophomore Ethan Damiano for the Rich Thomasey shuttle hurdles, earning them plaques.

McAlmont and Nalbach were also part of the Rams’ winning sprint medley.

Randolph senior Anthony Zarro leaped 42-7.5 to win the triple jump by more than a foot.

“We saw it was a special race, and we’re pleased we could win,” McAlmont said. “It’s a tough day for everyone. No one was running very fast.”

Randolph senior Aliyah Huland El led the triple jump field at 35-4.5, as her team placed third. Hanover Park juniors Danielle Monahan and Emily Steinbach finished first overall.

Sophomore Nickolette Dunbar (40-8) led Whippany Park to first place in the shot put. Sophomore Kathryn Campbell had the top javelin mark (115-7) as Parsippany finished first. Senior Conor McClain crushed the competition with a throw of 181-6 as Morris Hills won the boys javelin.

Madison senior Abe Gertler cleared 13-6 as his team won the pole vault.

Mendham junior Spencer Clouse was the only high jumper to clear six feet, as he and Malcolm Montilus won the high jump. Sophomore Leah Wis cleared 5-3 as Montville won the girls high jump.

Mendham swept both varsity 4x400s to close out the meet. Junior Sierra Tonnesen anchored the girls in 59.5, and also anchored the Minutemen’s fourth-place 4×800 (2:18).

“It’s very exciting being in a very competitive race,” said junior Mitch Anderson, who ran the 800 leg on Mendham’s winning DMR — his first varsity relay outdoors. “I didn’t like the wind on the back stretch. It’s no fun. You’ve got to push through it, and know in a couple of minutes you’ll be done.”
