RB Catholic runs title streak to 9

TOMS RIVER

Not even a touch of the flu could stop the Red Bank Catholic girls swim team.

The Caseys won their ninth straight title at the 36th annual Shore Conference Swimming Championships at the Ocean County YMCA on Sunday.

“In the last few weeks, the flu bug bit us a little bit,” said Gary Billyer, the Caseys’ first-year coach. “We’re at the tail end of our battle with it.”

Sprinter-distance swimmer Alli Villane accepted the championship plaque from meet director Brian Cerbone.

“This feels pretty good,” she said. “It’s my senior year. I’m happy to have been a part of the team for four years. This title is icing on the cake.”

The Caseys scored 230 points.

“We had a lot of seniors last year,” Villane said, “and we were a little nervous coming into this meet. We rallied together and were able to win it. We know we have a lot of depth and that we are strong in the last two relays.”

Red Bank Catholic’s first win was in the 500-yard freestyle, the meet’s seventh event. Junior Jackie Van Lew won in 5:06.21.

“We can’t always win all of the races,” she said. “I am happy with whatever our girls do. It does not matter if we win or lose as long as we have fun. That’s really all that matters.”

Van Lew said the Caseys have a strong chemistry.

“We have all gotten to know each other,” she said. “We all really love each other. Our freshmen and sophomores are supportive. We all pull for each other. Our freshmen and sophomores make our team complete.”

Van Lew admitted to feeling fatigued in the 500.

“I felt a little tired,” she said, “but I felt if I swam it right I would have no problem. My arms felt tired on the middle of the 10th lap. My training has been more difficult in the last few weeks. I did not feel very rested. I swam as hard as I could.”

The Caseys followed with wins in the 200 (1:39.94) and 400 (3:36.25) freestyle relays.

Swimming the 200 were Karli Rymer, Morgan Belforti, Shannon Belforti and Van Lew. Competing in the 400 were Rymer, Morgan Belforti, Shannon Belforti and Van Lew.

“We scored top eight finishes,” Billyer said. “We wanted to keep reeling in the points. There are a lot of elite swimmers all over Monmouth and Ocean counties. The depth of the competition is strong.”

St. Rose junior Casey Lawson set a meet record in the 200 individual medley (2:09.21) and won the 100 backstroke (58.04). Lawson broke the previous record of 2:07.23, set in 2003 by Red Bank Regional’s Mary McCue.

“I definitely did not expect to win two events,” she said. “In the IM, I just wanted to race. Whatever was to happen was to happen. I wanted to swim my fastest and swim my best. Setting the record was not even in my mind. I felt good throughout the whole 200.”

Lawson said she worked on the breaststroke.

“It’s my weakest stroke,” she said, “but it was good throughout the turns. My start was clean and I hit the turns well. I worked on keeping my arm speed up and on increasing the pull. I made sure I executed each kick with 100 percent efficiency.”

St. Rose sophomore Katie Hammond captured the 200 (1:53.43) and 100 (52.53) freestyles.

“In the 200, I did not feel that good,” she said. “I felt really, really tired. I have been training real hard lately. Starting on the second 100 yards, my legs felt really tired and then my shoulders felt kind of sore.

“I felt a lot better in the 100 than I did in the 200. The 100 is shorter. I like it better than the 200. The 100 is a sprint. The shorter races are not as tiring.”

Shore Regional sophomore Helen Grossman set a meet record in the 100 butterfly (55.93). She broke the record (56.77) she set last year.

“I was definitely going for it,” she said. “I have been swimming real well. I hoped to beat it. I am happy, happy that I broke 56 seconds. I have been working a lot on my starts and turns. They had not been my best so I tried to really work on them. They were pretty good today.

“I was a little bit tired. Other than that, I felt really good. My stroke felt strong. I feels good to beat my record. I went in knowing I could go faster than I did last year. My teammates encouraged me to go break it again.”

Marlboro senior Joanna Han set a meet record in the 100 breast stroke (1:05.73). She bested the previous record of 1:05.90, set in 2006 by Rumson-Fair Haven Regional’s Lesley Pringle.

“I tried to go for my best time and I got a personal best,” Han said. “I did not really feel I could win it. It was a great surprise. The atmosphere definitely helped me. Everyone was real supportive. My teammates pushed me to win. That was really helpful.”

Han said the race was a struggle at times.

“I was dying,” she said, “but on the last lap, I felt really great. I was sprinting and heading toward the wall as I wanted to finish really strong. I was dying on the third lap. My whole body was sinking. After the flip, I started feeling better. I always die on the third lap for some reason.

Manasquan sophomore Sophie Smith took the 50 freestyle in a school-record 23.92. She broke the previous record of 24.18 set in last year’s meet by Hannah Briant.

“The 50 is a sprint so anything can happen,” Smith said. “I just decided to go for it. I did what I could do to get ready. Breaking the record was in the back of my head, but I did not think about it that much. In this race, there a lot of places where you can mess up. I had good starts, good turns and a good finish.

“If you do that, the rest will work out. I was kind of on autopilot. I blocked everything out. I worked on my technique during practice so that I would not have to think about it during the race. It’s pretty cool to set the record. It still does not seem real. I had been thinking about this race for a while. Now that it is over, it still does not seem real.”

Jackson Memorial captured the 200 medley relay in 1:53.92. Competing were Mia Francisco, Kaitlin Idank, Anna Francisco and Gabby Wilson.
