Jake Mostyn-Kolb doesn’t hold back his optimism about his Melbourne High tennis teammate and doubles partner, Greg Durham.
“I definitely think he can win it if we get there as a team,” Mostyn-Kolb said Thursday as his team was in the process of finishing its Class 3A, District 13 championship, a feat matched by the Melbourne girls.
“There” is the state tournament, which will be played next week around the Orlando area. Florida high school tennis teams who finished first or second in their district begin regional play today. Winners advance to Thursday’s second regional round, and winners that day move on to state.
Melbourne’s boys and girls are two of a number of Brevard County teams in the race, and they both play at Fee Avenue Courts in Melbourne today, the boys against Okeechobee and the girls against South Fork.
The Merritt Island boys will also play locally today, as will the girls teams of Rockledge and Holy Trinity. First-round road teams from the area are boys teams from Viera and Holy Trinity, and the girls team from Satellite. The West Shore boys played at Suncoast on Monday.
The Mustangs boys advanced to the state tournament for the first time last season. Last week, they won Class 2A, District 13 in what coach Wally Norwich said was “a team effort led by Albert Go.”
“We don’t have quite as much depth (as last year),” Norwich said, “but they play very well.”
Go, the No. 1 singles player for Merritt Island, earned the same automatic trip to the state tournament by winning the No. 1 bracket that Mostyn-Kolb did in 3A. Rockledge’s Katie Sidor did the same – all have been to state before – and all three also advanced with their doubles teammates, each of whom play No. 2 singles.
For Sidor, it was sister Emily. For Go, it was Noah Rawls.
