Before the week is over, five fall sports will have conducted postseason events, including a handful of state championships. Tonight, the focus is on regional semifinal volleyball, and four Brevard County teams will play locally.
That will include a district rematch, as Class 5A, District 14 champion Merritt Island hosts district runner-up Rockledge at 7 p.m. The Mustangs cruised past Mount Dora in last week’s regional quarterfinal.
The winner will face either Pompano Beach or Cardinal Gibbons in a regional final on Saturday. Last year, Cardinal Gibbons was a regional finalist and lost to eventual state champion Bishop Moore, one week after the Mustangs lost to the same Hornets.
Tonight, it is Holy Trinity that gets the Bishop Moore challenge. The Tigers, Class 4A, District 8 champions, host the Hornets, also at 7.
By then, Viera will have completed its first day of the Class 3A boys golf tournament at Deer Island Golf and Lake Club in Tavares. The Hawks will begin to tee off at 8:54 a.m. and will play with golfers from Davie Western and Jacksonville Mandarin on the first of two days.
Eau Gallie ninth-grader Carter Stewart, who won the District 12 and Region 4 titles, will play in the 2A field at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, teeing off at 8:45 a.m. Regional runner-up Clay Matthews of Cocoa Beach will share the tee time but start on a different hole.
