Four area regions will host track meets today to see which sprinters, jumpers and throwers can advance to the state tournament next week.
Region 1, Class 5A will compete at Northwestern State starting at 12:30; Region 1, Class 4A will head up to Benton and will start at 11 a.m.; Region 1, Class 3A will travel down to Westlake and will start at 11 a.m. while Region 1, Class 1A will take place in Monroe.
Region 1, Class 2A will occur on Thursday at Lee Hedges starting at noon.
The B and C classes hosted their regional meets Tuesday, but results couldn’t be obtained by press time.
The top three individuals in each finals heat will advance to the state championships May 8-10 at LSU.
BPCC adds Arcadia player
The BPCC men’s basketball team continues its string of local recruiting by adding Arcadia’s Antwine Baker.
Baker, a Times All-Area first-team and Class 1A All-State selection, averaged 20 points, eight rebounds and two blocks as a senior at Arcadia.
The Hornets advanced to the semifinals this past season.
SUSLA adds Michigan native
The Southern-Shreveport men’s basketball team added 6-foot-9 Michigan native DaMontre McFarland.
McFarland averaged 22 points and 15 rebounds per game in high school.
The SUSLA program finished 20-8 and reached the Region 23 basketball tournament this season.
Coach David Francis was named the Louisiana junior college coach of the year while Mark Gray (15 points, 10 rebounds per game) won the state’s junior college player of the year.
Loyola soccer player to Rhodes
Loyola midfielder Andy Nguyen will continue his soccer career at Division III member Rhodes College in Memphis.
Nguyen, the Times All-City first team selection, was a three-time all-district first team.
