Tradition dictates Crystal Garrett and Kyle Garrett should shake hands. Crystal coaches the Union volleyball team and Kyle serves the same role for Monroe Central’s squad. Tradition would say that, in the interest of sportsmanship, the coach of the Rockets and the coach of the Golden Bears should shake hands before and after the county rivals meet.
But they don’t. The two rival coaches are married, and instead of a handshake, they hugged before their two teams faced off Monday in Modoc.
“It’s just natural,” Crystal said. “We are a husband and wife, we always will be a husband and wife. So we don’t shake hands, because it’s not a business. We’re not a business, our marriage isn’t a business.”
