Two area girls soccer teams opened up their 2014 seasons on Monday.

Freshman Jessie Vandenbark netted four goals and Jensen Hocter added one of her own as River View defeated Steubenville Central Catholic, 5-1, on Monday evening in Warsaw.

Heather Maxwell had seven saves in the Lady Bears’ win. River View also won the reserve game, 12-0.

The Lady Bears (1-0) will return to the field at 7 p.m. Wednesday when they play host to Chippewa.

Ridgewood also opened up its season at home, earning a 1-1 tie against nonleague foe Harrison Central.

Alexis Yoho gave the Lady Huskies a 1-0 lead with 11:35 to play in the first half. Yoho won a ball off of a Ridgewood goal kick and scored on her team’s first shot.

Early in the second half, Kristin Milligan hustled to deflect a pass from the Harrison Central defense and Marissa Whitt collected the loose ball to score her first career goal to tie the game.

Ridgewood had an 18-10 advantage in shots, and Karrie Bluck finished with eight saves.

The Lady Generals will play at 5 p.m. Thursday against Coshocton at Kids America.
