Stewarts Creek came to Riverdale Tuesday night searching for its first District 7-AAA victory on the season, but the Warriors (14-9, 3-5 District 7-AAA) weren’t going to that happen.

Riverdale turned a four-point halftime lead and into a 72-50 win, earning a sweep against the Red Hawks (7-16, 0-9) on the year.

“We’ve got to learn to get over the hump,” Stewarts Creek coach Arnett Bodenhamer said. “If you’re a competitor, if you’re a winner, (it should weigh on you). But if you’re OK with it, then it’s just like you’re going out there to play ball.”

Stewarts Creek was down by as many as 18 points in the second quarter, but ended the half on a 12-1 run. At halftime Riverdale’s lead was 36-32.

“Coach motivated us at half and it was our transition defense that was getting beat so we corrected that mistake and that was it,” Riverdale senior Steven Wilson said.

The older, more experienced Warriors were not rattled though and started the third quarter on a 16-4 run. Jalen Campbell scored six of his game-high 18 points during the spurt.

“I was worried, because you know momentum is a big thing,” Riverdale coach Kevin Woodson said. “So that was a big gut check, but the guys came out and played good defense in the third quarter and held them to six points.”

Jalen Fearn tied with Campbell to lead all scorers with 18. The Red Hawks Jaylan Washington added 15.

Wilson finished with 14 points for the Warriors.

GIRLS

Riverdale 67 Stewarts Creek 57: The third-ranked Lady Warriors played 12 girls early Tuesday night against first-year school Stewarts Creek, but were forced to play their starters to end the game as the Red Hawks kept it close in a losing effort 67-57.

The Lady Warriors (19-4, 7-1) played at Stewarts Creek (5-17, 1-8) earlier this year and blew out the Lady Red Hawks 67-27. Tuesday, Riverdale was up by as little as six with less than a minute to go in the third quarter.

“I don’t think you can take anything for granted in this district, period,” Stewarts Creek coach Jessica Jackson said. “Since the last time we’ve played our kids have grown a lot. Our kids are getting a little bit more confident and they’re playing harder.”

Shelbie Davenport had a game high 25 points for Riverdale and Caroline Patrick added 21 for the Lady Warriors.
