Roberson football players have rallied around one of their own.
First-year starting quarterback Darrion Payne (632 yards and one touchdown with six interceptions) missed an Oct. 17 game at Erwin (a 26-9 loss by the Rams) to be with his mother as her health was failing.
The junior also sat out Friday’s 42-13 loss at Reynolds.
Funeral services for Shirley McDowell Payne were held the next day in Arden. She was 58.
Darrion Payne has enjoyed a pair of 100-yard passing games this season and threw for a career-high 241 yards in a 32-14 loss at North Buncombe on Oct. 10.
Support for the signal caller is evident on a Facebook page set up for Roberson football here.
Roberson (4-6, 1-4) closes out its regular season Friday at home against Enka (1-9, 0-5).
First-year coach Chris Deal added his own personal touch to the back of the Rams’ home and away uniforms this fall. Instead of each player’s last name, they read “family” and “unity.”
