Reynolds will be without two of its key football players for disciplinary reasons in Friday’s season opener against visiting West Forsyth.
Senior Andrew Swicegood was the top returning tackler (110 tackles, 11 for a loss in 2013) for the Rockets. Swicegood is no longer a Reynolds student and indicated on Twitter that he has transferred to a Florida high school.
Junior Rico Dowdle (369 yards, four touchdowns) was expected to be one of Reynolds’ featured running backs, but will also sit out Friday. He is still part of the team and could return at a later date, said Rockets coach Shane Laws, who declined further comment on the suspensions.
Dowdle received a scholarship offer from Wake Forest in June. He also led the Reynolds basketball team in scoring (17.5 points per game) as a sophomore.
West Forsyth (which sits on the western edge of Winston-Salem) is the Carolina Piedmont Conference preseason favorite and ranked No. 8 in the NCPreps.com 4-A poll. Senior defensive lineman Jalen Dalton has more than 20 scholarship offers, including one from defending national champion Florida State.
West Forsyth beat Reynolds, 28-0, in 2013.
