Roncalli's Erickson heads All-Area team as HTR Media Player of the Year

Throughout his career, Roncalli senior Josh Erickson had always played in the post. An torn ACL by shooting guard Sam Scheer during football changed that.

Erickson, the 2014 HTR Media All-Area Boys Basketball Player of the Year, filled the void at guard after having been exclusively a center before the season.

With Erickson now playing the two-guard, he went from averaging 6.8 points per game to leading the Olympian Conference with 17 a contest and taking the Jets to within a game of playing for a Division 3 state title.

Erickson was the OC Player of the Year as well as being named an honorable mention all-state selection by the Associated Press.

When asked what caused the dramatic uptick in Erickson’s scoring, Roncalli coach Joe Rux gave a simple answer. He wasn’t asked to last year.

“We had a great point guard last season in Nate Lassila and there weren’t enough points to go around,” Rux said. “Instead, Josh did whatever the team needed. He was really good at being aggressive on the offensive end.”

Now, with the offensive load on his shoulders and a new position, Erickson was able to go and find his shot whenever he wanted.

“Josh is a very strong, diverse kid,” Rux said. “He did a good job of getting to the rim and having an impact on both the offensive and defensive glass.”

Erickson has a very balanced game, averaging 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 48 percent from the floor and 39 percent from 3-point.

“At the beginning Josh went through a transition,” Rux said of Erickson’s position change. “He listened really well and as the year went on got better and better.”
