The Xavier Prep boys’ water polo team reached a new milestone Tuesday as the Saints defeated perennial power Palm Desert for the first time in school history.
Troy Boydstun had three goals to lift the Saints to a 7-5 victory over the Aztecs, the defending CIF water polo champions.
“It was a good all-around water polo match and great for the desert,” Palm Desert coach Greg Garczynski said. “We made some mistakes and the momentum shifted in the final period but they played really well.”
Ryan Cenicola added two goals for Xavier Prep, which outscored Palm Desert 3-0 in the fourth quater.
Ben Quagliani and Nathan Salmon scored one goal apiece while Dan Alling contributed 14 saves in goal for the Saints, who visit Palm Springs on Thursday.
Boys’ water polo
Palm Springs 13, Indio 4: The Indians improved to 2-0 in DVL (9-6 overall) as Chris McCall led with three scores at the Palm Springs Swim Center.
Justyn Roach, Ceiba Becker and Nick Gayer added two goals apiece for Palm Springs. Nick LaBrecque finished with eight saves.
The Indians host Xavier Prep at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday.
La Quinta 20, Cathedral City 3: Justin Hop scored five goals as the Blackhawks won at home for their first DVL victory.
Tanner Mitchell, Spencer Lowell, Sam King and Todd Becker had three goals apiece. Frankie Sanchez, Alex Ostland and Will Alwine also scored for La Quinta (1-1), which hosts Indio at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday.
Palm Valley: In the third Majestic League meet held in Riverside, Sam Barton won the 5K run in 17 minutes, 48 seconds for the Firebirds, who finished second overall as a team.
David Kocen took fourth (20:42) while Zach Jenkins was 10th (21:51). Sam Kocen (12th, 21:36) and Stockton Smith (21st, 23:33) also contributed.
Chloe Sweeney led the girls with a third place finish (23:42) while Lynsey Byrd took fifth(25:41).
Palm Springs 3, Cathedral City 0: The Indians cruised to a 25-16, 25-11, 25-15 victory over the Lions as Asia O’Neil had nine kills, two aces and two blocks.
Ashtyn Lyneis finished with nine kills and four aces while Mary Lake added eight kills, two aces and 30 assists for Palm Springs, which improved to 6-0 in DVL (12-3 overall).
Sarah White recorded five kills and a block for the Indians, who visit Palm Desert at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
Desert Christian Academy 3, Desert Chapel 0: The Conquerors won 25-17, 25-12, 25-7 on the road as Cami Frahmann led offensively with eight kills.
Olivia Hoddick added 11 aces while Bella Smith chipped in with nine aces for Desert Christian Academy (7-4, 6-2), which visits Bloomington Christian on Thursday.
Palm Valley 3, Redlands Adventist 1: Jaime Wanless finished with 10 aces as the Firebirds won 26-24, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22.
Jasmine Bosnino recorded five kills while Suzannah Schmidt added 21 digs for Palm Valley (6-2), which visits Joshua Springs on Thursday.
Amistad 3, Mt. San Jacinto 0: Amistad High School of Indio scored a straight-set victory over Mt. San Jacinto High School of Palm Springs in a Serrano League match played in Indio.
Amistad won the sets in the match 25-19, 25-12, 25-21. The winning team saw contributions from Jose Montez, Sergio Alejo, Chris Diaz, Omar Ceja, Chris Gonzalez, Frankie Gonzalez, Carlos Gonzalez, Saul Cazares, Christian Yanez and Omar Aguliz.
Amistad will be home on Tuesday to face La Familia in another league match.
La Quinta 271, Cathedral City 318: At Tahquitz, Kaitlyn Ellis had a low of 39 to lead the Blackhawks.
Ellis was followed by Mariah Moon (46), Jacy Esteves (57), Jordan Nadler (63) and Mykenzie Moyle (64).
La Quinta (13-3, 10-1 in DVL) face Palm Desert at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Indian Wells Golf Resort.
Palm Desert: The Aztecs shot a team score of 309 as they defeated Xavier Prep by forfeit. The Saints’ top golfer, Malia Ebersberger, was forced to withdraw after three holes due to illness.
Jiyoon Jang (37) and Madison Walker (38) had the low rounds for Palm Desert. They were followed by Kiki Liu (41), Madison Rincon (45), Sophia Zepeda (48) and Jennifer Hanson 54.
Elle Otten led Xavier Prep with a 39.
Coachella Valley: At Palm Valley Country Club, Jazmin Huante (44) and Kalina Ortega (54) both had their personal best rounds as the Arabs defeated Palm Springs by forfeit.
Coachella Valley faces Indio at Indian Palms on Thursday.
Xavier Prep 13, Cathedral City 5: Julia Way swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 to lift the Saints at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Tiani Jadulang (6-0), Maddy Rhodes (6-0), Savannah Jessup (6-2) and Sarah Rincon (6-0 also won in singles for Xavier Prep.
In doubles, Bryana Quintana with Caroline Hammer swept 6-0 6-0 6-0 while Yajaria Castillo and Fernanda Gonzalez won 6-0. The teams of Sonja Hiller and Allie Davlantes (6-0) and Lilly Sun and Gillan Berg (6-0) also won a set apiece.
For Cathedral City, Brigette Salinas (7-6) and Obinne Onyeader (6-2) won in singles while Araceli Martinez with Jelli Mineses won 6-2 6-2 in doubles. Jazmin Munoz and Alyssa Taong added a 6-3 victory.
Xavier Prep (10-3, 8-2 DVL) hosts La Quinta at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
