The Palma High boys tennis team, the newcomers to the Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division, picked up its first-ever win over Stevenson, 4-3 on Thursday afternoon.

It was the divisional opener for Palma, which improved to 3-3 overall.

In the No. 1 singles match, Randy Cory defeated Ryan Hayes 6-0, 6-0. Noel Calinawan also prevailed for Palma in straight sets.

The doubles team of Christian Calinawan and Steven Johnsen won 6-3, 6-1, while the team of Dalton Dovolis and Mason Miguel won 6-2, 7-6 in their match.

Palma plays Carmel on Monday at Hartnell College.

Monte Vista Christian 6, Alisal 1: At Alisal, the Mustangs won a MBL Pacific Division contest against the Trojans.

Singles: Jayson Lee (MV) def. Jacob Garcia (A) 6-1, 7-5; Brian Lai (MV) def. José Negrete (A) 6-2, 6-0; Adrian Serrato (A) def. Colby Richardson (MV) 6-2, 4-6, 10-8, and Antonio Ruiz (MV) def. Abraham Lozano (A) 6-1, 6-1.

Doubles: Anthony Kua-Griffin Ditmars (MV) def. Oscar Ramirez-José Rivera (A) 6-2, 6-1; Randy Dias-Miguel Lim (MV) def. Cristian Cruz-Abdiel Calvillo (A) 6-0, 6-1, and Oscar Chang-Jacky Hsu (MV) won by default.

Baseball

Seaside 10, Anzar 10 (6): At Seaside, the teams remained tied after six innings when darkness halted the game.

For Seaside, freshman Marcus Dorn scored four runs, was walked four times and stole four bases. Also for the Spartans, Tristian Beza got three hits, had three RBIs and scored a run. Jimmy Peters scored three runs and walked four times.

For Anzar, Andrew Huaracha had two hits and one run, and Christian Monroy got two hits and two runs.

Seaside (0-2-1) hosts a doubleheader against Mendota on Saturday.

Monte Vista Christian 5, Salinas 3 (8): At Washington Middle School, the Mustangs scored two in the extra inning to defeat host Salinas in an MBL Gabilan Division contest.

Trailing 3-0 with three outs to go, Salinas rallied to tie the game at 3-3 and force extra innings.

Josh Olivarria and Justin Flores each doubled, and Nate Jones tied it up with a two-run hit.

But Monte Vista Christian, which had 12 hits in the game, retook the lead right away and made it stick.

Dylan Tracy was the winning pitcher, Justin Flores took the loss.

The Mustangs were led by Justin Muller with three hits, while Noah Zertuche went 2-for-3.

Jon Santos went 2-for-3 for Salinas.

Salinas (3-4, 1-1 MBL Gabilan) faces Hollister at home in one week.

Softball

Notre Dame 6, Soquel 3: At Soquel, the Spirits’ Elizabeth Ray held back the Knights in helping the Spirits get the nonleague win.

Ray struck out 11 and allowed seven hits, two which were home runs.

Aireal Rivera-Sakasegawa went 4-for-4, Spencer Hyosaka went 2-for-2 and Marisa Given hit a triple.

Stevenson 6, Alvarez 0: At Stevenson, Jensen Main threw a no-hitter, striking out 14 in the win over the Eagles.

Main allowed only one walk, to the first Alvarez batter she faced.

Main and Dominique Seva’aetasi each hit a home run in the first inning and finished with three hits.

Tuava Tula and Emily Schnider each had two hits.

Stevenson (2-0) hosts North Monterey County on Friday.

Carmel 14, Seaside 0: At Seaside, an eight-run fifth inning secured the Padres win over the Spartans in nonleague play.

Quinn Bernal was the winning pitcher. At the plate, she had a triple and a single.

Lauren Salvati hit two triples as part of a four-hit day, and Angelina Savoldi got two hits.

Seaside (1-5) hosts Pajaro Valley today.

Boys volleyball

Palma 3, Salinas 0: At Palma, the Chieftains downed the Cowboys in an MBL contest.

Palma’s Toby Weisner had 13 kills, Jean-Luc Adam 12 kills and setter Jeremy Dicks 39 assists.

Palma travels to Alisal on Tuesday.

Boys track

Alisal 68, Salinas 66: At Salinas, the Trojans picked up the narrow win over the Cowboys.

Alisal’s Omar Guzman won both hurdling events, while teammate Eduardo Valencia won both distance jumping events. Cesar Perez won the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 4 inches, and he also won the 400-meter run at 53.35 seconds.

Trent Storm won two events for Salinas, taking first in the 800-meter run and the 1,600-meter run.

North Salinas 95, North Monterey County 41: At North Monterey County, the Vikings won the meet over the Condors.

North Monterey County’s Isaiah Russell won the 400-meter run in 54.9 seconds and the 200-meter run in 24.1 seconds. Mario Gonzalez, a Condor thrower, took first in the discus (161 feet, 1 inch) and the shot put (50 feet, 2 inches).

Girls track

Salinas 106, Alisal 26: At Salinas, the Cowboys won big over the Trojans in a two-team meet.

Salinas junior Leah Meuter won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs. Distance runner Malena Grover won by 47 seconds in the 3,200-meter run. Xochitl Rodriguez was first in the triple jump (32 feet, 6 inches) and the 100-meter run (13.72 seconds).

Alisal’s Elizabeth Hernandez (400-meter run) and Clealy Torrez (100-meter hurdles) each won their event.

North Monterey County 73, North Salinas 59: At North Monterey County, the Condors had three triple winners in getting the team win over the Vikings.

Sophomore Destaney Vasquez won the 1,600-meter run, the 3,200-meter run and had a leg in the winning 1,600-meter relay. Freshman Elisa Ibarra prevailed in the 400-meter run, the 800-meter run and also had a leg in the 1,600-meter relay.

Taylor Blaha won all three jumping events. In the triple jump, she leaped 31 feet, 11 inches.

College baseball

Hartnell 13, Gavilan 6: At Salinas, the Panthers’ bats broke through in bunches to get the win over the Rams.

Hartnell scored six runs in the fifth and four in the seventh.

Winning pitcher Jacob Cabral struck out seven and walked two. Shane Sudsbury had three hits and two RBIs. Matt Flores had two hits and three RBIs, and Wayne Larronde finished with two hits and two RBIs.

Hartnell plays West Valley at home on Saturday.
