Roundup: Tawiah scores 26 points to spark Matawan past Long Branch

Senior guard Chris Tawiah registered 16 of his game-high 26 points in the first half and made five 3-pointers while junior guard Jason Dunne added nine of his 15 points in the second half and made three 3-pointers as the No. 10 Matawan boys basketball team upset No. 4 Long Branch, 60-48, on Monday night.

Junior guard Joe Piscopo added eight of his 10 points in the second half as the Huskies (5-1, 2-0) took sole possession of first place in Class B North with the victory.

Long Branch senior guard Terrel Cox scored 14 of his team-high 20 points in the first half, including the 1,000th point of his career for the Green Wave (4-2, 2-1). Cox went over the 1,000-point plateau with a basket in the second quarter. He now has 1,012 career points. Senior forward Hassan Foster and senior guard Izayah Irizarry each finished with seven points for Long Branch.

WALL 46, OCEAN 41: Junior guard Brendan Barcas scored 17 of his game-high 26 points in the second half as he helped the Crimson Knights (3-2, 1-0) to a Class B North victory. Sophomore guard Ryan Janeczek, junior guard Trent Mitchell and senior forward Naiquan Smith-Gilliam each added six points. Ocean senior forward Chris Seager scored 14 of his team-high 16 points in the first half for the Spartans (1-3, 0-2).

TR EAST 53, BRICK 49: Senior guard C.J. Hirschy scored all 17 of his points in the fourth quarter when the Raiders (4-1, 1-0) outscored the Green Dragons, 22-6. Brick’s Alex Pena scored seven of his 13 points in the second half for Brick (0-5, 0-2).

HENRY HUDSON 63, ASBURY PARK 52: Senior guard Jaxon Terrell had 21 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore guard Tom DeFilippo added 14 points and six assists as the Admirals (2-2, 1-1) defeated the Blue Bishops (0-4, 0-2) in a Class B Central game. Asbury Park sophomore center Mikal Fearon had 21 points and 20 rebounds.

HOLMDEL 55, MONMOUTH 41: Senior forward Gerard Nocera scored 19 points and junior guard Luke Mayell added 16 points as the Hornets (2-5, 1-2) defeated the Falcons (2-4, 1-2) in a Class A Central game. Monmouth’s Dan Curtis had 13 points and Kyle Bradshaw had 11 points.

CBA 55, MIDD. SOUTH 34: Sophomore forward Pat Andree scored 20 points, junior forward Jack Laffey had 10 points and senior guard Louie Pillari added seven points as the No. 4 Colts (3-2, 2-0) defeated the Eagles (2-3, 0-2) in a Class A North game. Middletown South senior guard Matt Gray finished with a game-high 20 points.

LAKEWOOD 78, PINELANDS 31: Sophomore guard Amir Tyler had 18 points and 10 steals as the No. 2 Piners (4-1, 2-0) defeated the Wildcats (2-3, 1-1) in a Class B South game. Sophomore guard Hassan Diawara scored 14 points and senior guard Daniel Niblack added eight points for Lakewood. Pinelands junior Milanj Coursey had 10 points.

IN GIRLS BAKSETBALL:

MARLBORO 28, COLTS NECK 24: Haley Unger finished with a team-high 10 points as the Mustangs (4-0, 2-0) remained undefeated in Class A North with a win over the Cougars (4-2, 0-2). Nicole Shatsky finished with nine points for the Mustangs.

Lindsey Bosland had a team-high 13 points and six rebounds for the Cougars.

FREEHOLD TWP. 52, HOWELL 33: Samantha Famulare scored a team-high 15 points leading the Patriots (3-2, 1-1) over the Rebels (2-2, 1-1) in a Class a North game.

Sophia Carbone finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Patriots.

HOLMDEL 47, MONMOUTH 20: Morgan Graziano finished with a team-high 14 points leading the Hornets over the Falcons in a Class A Central game. Mia Ehling added 11 points for the Hornets.

WALL 45, OCEAN 25: Ellen Dougherty scored a team-high 15 points leading the Crimson Knights (4-2, 1-0) over the Spartans in a Class B North game. Sydney Darby added 14 points for the Crimson Knights.

IN ICE HOCKEY:

FREEHOLD TWP. 5, MIDD. NORTH 3: Freehold Township senior Adam Friedman recorded the 100th point of his career after scoring two goals and distributing a pair of assists on a couple of Greg Russo goals as the No. 6 Patriots (6-1-1) charged past the Lions (3-5-0) in a Class A North game.

Russo doled out three primary assists on both of Friedman’s tallies as well as a goal by Austin Treubert.

The Lions’ Khristian Acosta, Thomas Terranova and Vincent Tomasetti each scored a goal. Freehold Township goalie Nick Raiola stopped 13 shots to record the win.

RB CATHOLIC 9, RED BANK 3: Red Bank Catholic sophomore Evan Hoey recorded a hat trick, and now has 14 goals in six games played, while assisting on goals by Alec Mintz and John Gattuso as the No. 2 Caseys (6-1-1) moved past the crosstown rival Bucs (0-6-1) in a Class B North game.

Mintz finished with two goals and three assists while Donald Califano added two more in the winning effort. Drue Amato notched two goals for the Bucs.

Red Bank Catholic was supposed to play host to sixth-ranked Freehold Township on January 11, however, the game between the two Shore Conference powers has been postponed and rescheduled for Feb. 8 at 9 p.m.

MANALAPAN 3, HOPEWELL VALLEY 2: With the game tied at 2 late in the third period, Manalapan’s Eric Yarmolinsky found the back of the net to lift the Braves (4-2-1) over the Bulldogs (5-3-1) in a non-conference game.

Manalapan’s Branden Kushnir tied it at 1-1 in the first period before Kyle Rakovitch brought the Braves back to even at 2-2 late in the second period. James Ambrose stopped 22 of 24 shots to preserve the victory.
