Roundup: Tulare Western baseball sweeps Mt. Whitney in doubleheader


The Tulare Western baseball team swept Mt. Whitney in a nonleague doubleheader on Wednesday at Mt. Whitney.

The Mustangs trailed in both games.

Tulare Western trailed 1-0 in Game 1 but rallied to win 4-1.

Anthony Avila came through with a big two-run double, and Jordan Padilla pitched the final three innings to pick up the win.

In Game 2, Tulare Western scored five runs in the sixth inning for a 6-5 victory.

Avila had another big hit — a two-run triple — and Blake Costa and Drew Muller each came through with pinch-hit, RBI singles.

Isaac Cardenas pitched the final three innings for the win.

Mt. Whitney had runners on second and third with out in the bottom of the seventh, but Cardenas got out of the jam with a strikeout and groundout to first base.

Tulare Western (4-4-1) hosts Redwood in a doubleheader Saturday. Mt. Whitney (0-8-1) hosts Mission Oak on Tuesday.

“They showed a lot of resiliency,” Tulare Western coach Ken Searcy said. “Our pitching has been keeping us in games and giving us a chance.”

Redwood 4, Monache 0: The Rangers scored all four of their runs in the first inning to beat the Marauders in a shut out.

Jon Mascorro allowed only two hits over five innings to earn the win for Redwood (2-5). Corey Davis batted 2-for-4. Chase Proctor batted 1-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and a run scored. Jordan Arnold also drove in a run.

JoJo Narvaiz batted 1-for-3 for Monache (0-6).

Up next the Rangers play a double header at Tulare Western starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Golden West 7, Yosemite 4: The Trailblazers broke open a 1-1 tie with six runs in the sixth inning to beat the Badgers in the Central Valley Diamond Classic.

All 11 runs in the game were scored in the fifth inning or later. The teams combined for nine errors.

Blain Cox batted 2-for-3 for Golden West (5-1). Tristan Mason and Chris Hash each batted 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Kacey Seeger earned the win on the mound.

San Joaquin Memorial 12, Tulare Union 1: Gage Masterson hit two doubles and scored the only run for the Redskins in a loss to the Panthers.

John Chamalbide took the loss for Tulare Union (2-6).

Up next the Redskins visit Hanford West at 3:30 p.m today.


Tulare Union 6, Redwood 5: The Redskins topped the Rangers in a nonleague game Tuesday with a three-run, seventh-inning rally.

Danielle Gilbert had the winning hit, and finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Tulare Union. Presley Jamison was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Alondra Renteria had two ihits, including a double for the Redskins, and freshman Brayden Nunley was the winning pitcher.

Boys Golf

Redwood 220, CVC 233, Tulare Union 243: Sophomores Dakota Rhea and Nike Phan shot 36 and 38 to lead the Rangers in a non-league tournament against the Cavaliers and Redskins at Visalia Country Club.

John Karayan led CVC with a 39.

Boys Tennis

Golden West 8, Hanford West 1: The Trailblazers won all three doubles matches and all but one singles match in a West Yosemite League rout of the Huskies.

Juan Carlos Silva (6-0, 6-0), Stewart Bryan (6-0, 7-6), William Davila (7-6, 6-1), Matt Duyst (6-2, 6-2) and Brandon Romer (6-3, 6-2) won singles matches for Golden West (5-0, 3-0). Silva and Davila (8-1), Duyst and Ben Price (8-2) and Andrew Burgos and Billy Torres (8-4) all won doubles matches.

Redwood 9, Lemoore 0: The Rangers swept the Tigers in a WYL match at Lemoore.

Evan Morritse (6-1, 6-0), Dom Quintanilla (6-3, 3-6, 10-6), Mark Garcia (6-0, 6-1), Paul Krenz (6-2, 6-2), Ronald Vang (6-1, 6-0) and Jared Bigelow (6-1, 6-1) won singles matches for Redwood (4-1, 3-0). Morritse and Quintanilla (9-7), Garcia and James Choi (8-6) and Lane Crow and Adam Miller (8-3) won doubles matches.

Tulare Union 7, Hoover 2: The Redskins won all three doubles matches and four singles matches in a nonleague win against the Patriots.

Joseph Rico (6-0, 6-1), Trevor Anderson (6-1, 6-2), Luis Diaz (6-3, 6-3) and Lance Aguilar won singles matches for Tulare Union (2-1). Rico and Sudeep Dhanoa (8-4), Anderson and Diaz (8-2) and Jose Santana and Ricardo Gomez (9-8, 3) won doubles matches.

Boys Track and Field

Golden West 92.5, Corcoran 50.5, Granite Hills 26: Christian Rodriguez won the 100 meter dash (11.6) and 200 (23.7) as the Trailblazers won a tri-meet with the Grizzlies and Panthers.

Eduardo Banuelos won the 800 2:19.9) and 1,600 (5:00.4) for Golden West. Scott Hickam won the 110 high hurdles (16.5) and 300 low hurdles (42.1).

Girls Track and Field

Golden West 130, Granite Hills 18, Corcoran 17: Taylor Jackson won the 200 meter dash (27.9) and 400 (66.5) as the Trailblazers won a tri-meet with the Grizzlies and Panthers.

Addie Blair won the 1,600 (6:12.1) and 3,200 (13:49.5) for Golden West. Samantha Rachal won the 800 (2:46.4) and 100 high hurdles (16.3).
