DeSales sacked Warren Central quarterback Chance Shanklin nine times as the Colts improved to 3-0 with a 37-12 victory Friday night at Southern High School.

DeSales quarterback Austin Johnson threw three touchdown passes and kicked a 40-yard field goal for good measure. Warren Central (2-1) got two touchdown passes from Shanklin.

Both teams looked jittery in the early going, trading hard hits and possessions throughout a scoreless first quarter. But DeSales registered its first four first downs on a drive that started on its 10-yard line, capping it with Johnson’s field goal to start the second quarter.

The Colts drove downfield again on their next possession, but Johnson’s second attempt sailed wide right from 21 yards out.

DeSales scored its first touchdown with 31 seconds remaining in the first half when Johnson found Ruxer knifing through the secondary. Johnson’s point-after kick gave the Colts a 10-0 lead heading into the locker room.

They wasted no time continuing that momentum in the second half. They drove 55 yards on seven plays, with Ruxer running around right end from 4 yards out to make it 17-0 just three minutes into the third quarter.

The teams traded possessions before the Dragons finally were able to get on the scoreboard. They scored on a 34-yard pass from Shanklin to Jensen Feggins, but the extra-point attempt failed, and they trailed 17-6.

The Colts waited just two plays to answer. Johnson once again found Ruxer streaking through the secondary, and the two connected on a 78-yard touchdown pass to make it 24-6 with 3:31 left in the third quarter.

At that point the DeSales defense started chasing Shanklin, who was harassed into several incompletions when he wasn’t getting thrown for a loss. But he was able to find Chauncey Greer for a 67-yard strike that cut the lead to 24-12 with 4:42 remaining.

The Colts put the game away with two late touchdowns, the first a 50-yard run by Austin Tharp, who redeemed himself after his fumble set up Warren Central’s previous score. The second was a Johnson pass to Austin Hunt from 16 yards out with one minute remaining in the game.

Warren Central, ranked No. 3 in Class 5-A, was its own worst enemy, committing key penalties throughout the game. The Dragons had the first scoring threat of the game, earning a first down at the DeSales 15-yard line, but a penalty, an incompletion and a sack ended the threat, and DeSales took over from there.
