Sarah Bacon, a senior at Cardinal Ritter High School, won her first senior national title with a victory on women’s 1-meter Wednesday night in the USA Diving Championships at Knoxville, Tenn.
Bacon, a two-time junior national champion last week, scored 287.15 points. Second with 277.85 was Ariel Rittenhouse, Santa Cruz, Calif., who trained in Indianapolis before qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Michael Hixon, who recently transferred to Indiana University, was second in the men’s 1-meter. Aaron Fleshner, Spring, Texas, scored 452.40 to Hixon’s 427.05. Recent IU graduate Darian Schmidt was fourth with 407.20.
“This was my first senior meet since the 2012 Olympic Trials. I thought there was always a possibility I could win, but I really just wanted to go out and hit all of my dives,” Bacon told USA Diving.
