Helena Bryans was the top finisher for the Northville ‘B’ girls cross country team in Saturday’s season opening South Lyon Invitational held at the Island Lake State Recreation Area.

Ann Arbor Pioneer was the team champion with 72 points followed by Livonia Franklin, 82; Clay (Ohio), 92; Pinckney, 86; Northville, 132; and Plymouth, 195. Host South Lyon and South Lyon East factor in the team scoring.

Bryans, a sophomore, led the Mustangs in 17th with a 5-kilometer clocking of 21:56 followed by sophomore Katie Cheevor, 24th (22:17); freshman Anna Buettner, 28th (22:38); and junior Paige Zimmer, 30th (22:57). Senior Mirai Kobayashi also ran but was pulled from race due to dehydration problems.

“Bryans really stepped up today and ran a smart consistent race and improved from her time trail a week ago at camp,” Northville coach Nancy Smith said. “Cheevor also showed improvement from the camp time trail. I am excited to see what these two young athletes can do as the season progresses. Buettner, running in her first high school race, did a great job and earned her first medal of the season. Zimmer also ran a great race after being injured for most of cross country season and track season last year with shin problems.”

Other Northville finishers included sophomore Emily Kerr (23:12) and senior Addison Gaines (23:16).

“I was pleased with the efforts and the results today on a hot and humid day,” Smith said. “The girls are not used to running in these race conditions as the summer has been cool for the most part until this week.”
