Section 1 has elected to do away with the four-conference system this year and instead switch to a three-conference format. The changes eliminate an all-Rockland conference and spreads out the competition around the section.
Rockland schools will remain in their own leagues, separated by big schools and small schools, so the change really won’t affect those teams that much, especially when it comes to scheduling (since teams must play each league opponent twice during the regular season). Rockland will play in Conference 2, which is also the largest conference in the section with five leagues and 29 teams.
We knew that there would be no power league, so that finalization does not come as much of a shock to anyone. There are still some extremely competitive leagues, but none that will carry the same clout as past leagues have had.
With the move to three conferences, the section made the decision to still give out four postseason awards to players. Instead of awarding a player of the year to four conferences, the section will award three conference players of the year and an overall player of the year. The change was announced at the annual coaches meeting on Wednesday at Harrison.
